Glazing is an important aspect of framing that often overlooked.
Glass and Acrylic are the two primary materials to consider, both of which we offer in our bespoke frames.
Acrylic has gained popularity for several reasons which we have listed below. But in particularly you can't tell it is an acrylic and it is more transparent with no tint (unlike some glass).
The go to option is often 2mm float glass. 3mm and 4mm ca also be used on larger pictures but adds weights and cost. Glass has been used for hundreds of years and will protect your picture for generations, however there are now some viable alternatives.
Guide Cost - £
Relatively inexpensive
Consistent, it will not degrade over time
Is easy to clean
It is fully recyclable
Very reflective
No UV protection - which can cause art to deteriorate.
Slight green colour cast and less transparent than acrylic.
Very fragile making it difficult and expensive to ship without damage.
It is not safety glass and when it breaks, sharp shards can be dangerous which has an implication on where the art will hang, in a children's bedroom or nursery for example.
Glass is vulnerable to condensation as it is a good insulator, creating a risk of moisture which could damage your artwork and limits where it can be hung.
This type of glazing is an exceptional option when the artwork is to be mounted in a well-lit or sunny area which is prone to cause reflection.
The coating minimises glare and blocks 90% of UV light from reaching the artwork, therefore preventing fading and prolonging its life considerably.
Guide cost - ££
Can stop a lot of reflection
Can stop in excess of 90% of UV light hitting the artwork
More expensive than standard glass
99% UV protection glass, often termed "conservation grade" or "museum glass," prevents fading and protects artwork or delicate items from UV damage by blocking over 99% of harmful rays. Popular options include Artglass UV99, Tru Vue Conservation Clear, and anti-reflective, high-clarity museum glass, typically available for custom framing and display

Acrylic Glass allows 92% light transmission, more than that of float glass which tends to be 90% or lower. This absorbs many of the damaging UV wavelengths in natural and artificial light.
